Indoor Wireless 3D Evaluation Techniques for Wi-Fi, 5G, and IoT

On November 27th in Tokyo, and 29th in Osaka, two seminars on indoor wireless design were held with Dr. Vladan Jevremovic, Sr. Director of Research at iBwave Solutions. Attendees were educated on how iBwave can help design and optimize wireless networks in a variety of contexts, including 5G, Wireless IoT, and stadium Wi-Fi.

Both events reached maximum capacity, with over 100 hopeful attendees placed on waiting lists.

Discussing Indoor Wireless Design for 5G

While mobile carriers are still in the process of obtaining licenses as 5G operators, Dr. Jevremovic provided several case studies of indoor 5G network design. These examples outlined how building shape and construction materials can affect the reflection, diffraction, and penetration of 5G radio waves.

Dr. Jevremovic also discussed the roll out of millimeter wave frequency services in select cities across the US. He highlighted the difference in characteristics between millimeter wave and Sub-6GHz bands. Seminar attendees paid close attention to Dr. Jevremovic’s insights on the topic, since this technology is expected to expand to Japan this year.

Design Techniques for Wireless Internet of Things (IoT)

There are multiple wireless technologies used in IoT, including LoRa, BlueTooth, ZigBee, Wi-Fi, and 5G. Vladan provided a case study of a car factory using Wi-Fi IoT network at 2.4 GHz.

The most common issue with connectivity in car factories is the prevalence of metal materials that cause reflection and excessive attenuation, which can affect indoor signal strength.

Dr. Jevremovic showed how the customer was able to optimize their network with the help of iBwave Design, despite the complexity of the building layout.

Design Techniques for Stadium Wi-Fi

Milestone events will be held in Japan over the next two years, including the 2019 Rugby World Cup and 2020 Tokyo Olympics. To prepare, Wi-Fi expansion is underway at stadiums and venues across the country.

Unlike office buildings, external noise and interference with radio equipment must be considered when designing Wi-Fi networks for large public spaces. Dr. Jevremovic provided a demo showing how iBwave can deploy more than 100 access points without impacting the quality of the service.
Three distinct Wi-Fi stadium designs were presented. One design placed Access Points beneath the seating area, another placed them on handrails pointing at seats, and the third placed access points overhead. Dr, Jevremovic analyzed the cost of each approach, along with the pros and cons of each design.

With experience designing wireless networks for the FIFA World Cup in Russia, iBwave has positioned itself as the go to solution for high accuracy stadium Wi-Fi design.
